The United States Mint has decided to replace the existing eagle designs on the reverse of both the American Eagle Silver and American Eagle Gold Coins. Both will retain the respective Liberty designs that grace the obverse, but will gain new, distinctive designs of the American bald eagle for the reverse. The US Mint will carry on early in 2021 with the original eagle reverse designs before making the switch in both collections.

Obverse

On the obverse field of 2021-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins, you will find the image of Walking Liberty. This left-profile figure of Liberty was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and used on the US Half Dollar until 1947. The inscriptions on this side read Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2021.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2021-W Proof American Eagle Silver Coins includes a depiction of the heraldic eagle. Designed by John Mercanti in 1986 for this series, it is the latest iteration of a design that the US Mint has used on countless coins since 1794. The inscriptions on this side include United States of America, 1 oz. Fine Silver – One Dollar, and a W mint mark from the West Point Mint.

History

The heraldic eagle will eventually be replaced by a new image of the American bald eagle. Designed by Artistic Infusion Program artist Emily Damstra, the new design will depict a bald eagle swooping down toward an unseen nest with a large oak branch in its talons.
