The American Eagle Gold Coins marked the 35th anniversary of the program in 2021 with the debut of a new reverse design. The first-ever overhaul of an image on the coins came at the midway point of the year, which makes 2022 the first full-year release of American Eagle Gold Coins with the new design element on the reverse from start to finish. Highlights:
Certified coins in the American Eagle Series are assessed by coin graders to determine the visual appeal of the coins and the quality of the strike from the mint. Coins are assigned a grade on the Sheldon numeric scale from 0 to 70, with a 70 representing a perfect score and a coin with no flaws of any kind. The next most-common grade is 69, a coin that is considered near-perfect.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2022 American Eagle Gold Coins is the image of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907, it originally featured on the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read LIBERTY and 2022.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2022 American Eagle 1/10 oz Coin features the new bald eagle design from Jennie Norris. This image of the American bald eagles head in left-profile relief was chosen from a field of more than 30 possible designs to be the new face of the coin series. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD 5 DOLLARS.
History
The image of the bald eagle on the reverse was submitted by Jennie Norris, a member of the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program. Her new design for the reverse is the first design change in the history of the American Eagle Series.
Ordering
2022 American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coins available here are near-perfect specimens housed in plastic slabs. Mint State 69 coins have full, original mint luster and no more than two minor flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be outside the primary focal points of the coin. First Strike coins are those the PCGs received for certification within 30 days of release from the mint.
