Obverse
Liberty is found on the obverse side of 2022 American Eagle Gold Coins. This design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It features Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward you with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The background field includes sun rays, the U.S. Capitol Building, and a ring of 50 stars. Inscriptions on this face include LIBERTY and 2022.
Reverse
An American bald eagle is shown in the reverse design of 2022 American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins. This visual was created for this series in 2020 by Jennie Norris. It debuted in the second half of 2021 and makes its first full-year release in 2022 as the original reverse design is now retired from the series. The inscriptions that accompany the left-profile portrait of the eagle head include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.
History
American Eagle Gold Coins were introduced by the United States Mint in 1986. The coins featured Lady Liberty on the obverse and a family of bald eagles on the reverse. The coin series features 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. These weights are available to this day in the BU and Proof collections, as well as a 1 oz gold coin in the Burnished series.
