History

Themis, goddess of law and order, is perhaps most strongly associated with the Scales of Justice. While this visual representation of impartial judgment is often associated with Lady Justice of Rome, its origins go back all the way to ancient Egypt. There we see the scales used by the goddesses Maat and Isis. Once we arrive in the Hellenic period, the scales are then adopted by Themis, who then passed them on to her daughter, Dike. Themis is also notable for her blindfold, an addition from the 16^th century that implies her impartiality.
