Each 2022 Australian Florin 1/4 oz Platinum Coin here is presented in a plastic flip to preserve its condition. This coin is the third in the modern Florin series from Perth Mint, following the 2021 releases of a 2 oz silver coin and a 1/4 oz gold coin. The 2022 release marks the first platinum florin coin, making it a unique addition to this series.

Obverse

On the obverse, the 2022 Australian Florin Platinum Coin displays a right-profile relief of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Jody Clark in 2015. Her Majesty wears the George IV State Diadem in this design, which has appeared on Australian coins since its debut. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 1/4 OZ 9995 PT, 2022, and 25 DOLLARS.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2022 Florin 1/4 oz Platinum Coin includes the iconic Australian coat of arms, used on the first florin issued in 1910. The national coat of arms symbolizes the strength and unity of Australias states, with a shield flanked by a kangaroo and an emu. Each state is represented on the shield, and a seven-pointed Commonwealth Star above stands for the six states and one territory of Australia. Inscriptions here include ONE FLORIN – TWO SHILLINGS, ADVANCE AUSTRALIA, and 1910.

History

Australias original florin, minted in sterling silver, featured King Edward VIIs profile on the obverse and was produced by the Royal Mint in Melbourne. It marked Australias emerging identity, moving toward economic independence. Based on Britains florin, introduced in 1847 under Queen Victoria, this two-shilling coin was part of the pre-decimal currency system.
