Only the Australian Kookaburra Series is older than the Australian Koala Series from the Perth Mint. Introduced in 2007, the Australian Koala Silver Coins have offered new reverse designs each year with designs coming from various artists. The new 2022 Australian Koala Silver Coins feature a design of the beloved marsupial from Ing Ing Jong. Ms. Jongs history with the Perth Mint dates back a decade now to 2011 when she was hired as a coin designer. Her artwork has appeared on countless varieties of Perth Mint coins over the last decade, with several of her designs having featured on the coins of the Lunar Series II and Lunar Series III collections.
Obverse
On the obverse 2022 Australian Koala 1 oz Silver Coins is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is Jody Clarks 2015 effigy of the Queen that was initially developed for the Royal Mint of England. Debuting on Australian coins in 2018, it features the Queen with the George IV State Diadem Crown at the age of 89. The design includes inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2022 Australian Koala Silver Coin comes with an image of the sleepy koala. This design shows a koala as it slumbers on the branch of a gum tree, its arms and legs dangling down on either side of the branch. The field includes inscriptions of 2022 1 OZ 9999 SILVER, the P mint mark of Perth Mint, and a unique font for KOALA.
History
Australian Koala Silver Coins were, historically, issued on a mint-to-order basis. However, as of 2016, Perth Mint has issued the coins with a mintage cap of 300,000 specimens in this weight. Only the 2016 coin has seen a sellout of this mintage, though the 2017 coin came within 1,200 coins of a sellout.
Ordering
2022 Australian Koala 1 oz Silver Coins available here come in protective capsules for individual specimens. Multiples are packaged in rolls of 20 coins and boxes of 100 coins, with five rolls per box. All coins are Brilliant Uncirculated specimens.
