History
One way to trace the reign of Queen Elizabeth II is through the different portraits of Her Late Majesty that were designed for coinage. The first arrived in 1953 with a design by Mary Gillick. This portrait lasted for over a decade before being replaced by a new design in 1968 by Arnold Machin. In 1985, another portrait arrived courtesy of sculptor Raphael Maklouf. This was followed by Ian Rank-Broadleys acclaimed effigy released by the Royal Mint in 1998. The last official portrait debuted in 2015 from Jody Clark, who at 33 was the youngest of all five designers.
