For the obverse design of 2022 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins, the Royal Canadian Mint features the fourth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, this is just the second portrait of the Queen to come without a crown during her reign. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS, and 2022.

In the reverse field of the 2022 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/10 oz Gold Coin is a depiction of the sugar maple leaf. This design element was created by Walter Ott in 1979. It first featured on the 1 oz gold coin in this series and has gone on to grace all additional gold coins in the series, as well as the silver, platinum, and palladium coins. The inscriptions on this side read CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/10 OZ OR PUR.

These 1/10 oz gold coins in the Canadian Maple Leaf Series represent one of the first two fractional-ounce coins introduced in the gold series. In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced both a 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coin in the collection. In 2015, the mint added radial lines to the background field of all gold coins as a means of enhancing the security of the coins.
