Obverse

On the obverse of 2022 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/20 oz Gold Coins is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This image of the Queen was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt for use as the fourth-generation portrait of Her Majesty on all Canadian coinage. The design captures the Queen in right-profile relief with earrings and a necklace, but no crown, a first during her reign. Inscriptions on this face include ELIZABETH II, 1 DOLLAR, and 2022.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2022 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin comes with an image of the sugar maple leaf. The iconic symbol of the series and emblem of the nation of Canada, the sugar maple leaf was designed for this collection in 1979 by Walter Ott. It now features on all gold, silver, platinum, and palladium coins in the series. The inscriptions found on this side of the coin read CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/20 OZ OR PUR.

History

The Royal Canadian Mint rolled out the coins of the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Series over the course of several years. The 1 oz coin debuted in 1979, followed closely by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1982. The 1/2 oz coin was issued in 1986 and the 1/20 oz coin in 1993. The final coin introduced that is still in production is the 1 Gram gold coin released in 2014.
