This version of the sugar maple leaf was produced for the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the series. History

In 2014, the mint added radial lines to the background field on the obverse and reverse of the coins to combat counterfeiting. It also produced a micro-laser engraved privy mark for the reverse. This textured, maple leaf privy has the date marks last two digits, 22, which are not visible without the aid of magnification.
