The demands of Britain and her incessant wars during the 18th century led to protests against the Crown’s taxes in the Thirteen Colonies of America from at least a decade before the beginning of the War of Independence. Well before the Boston Tea Party, another outburst of unrest would mark a milestone on the way to revolution. The rapacious customs schooner HMS Gaspeeran aground near the village of Warwick in 1772 and came under attack from over fifty disgruntled locals, who captured the crew and burnt the vessel. History

The Gaspee Affair takes its name from a notorious British customs ship called theHMS Gaspee,which in the wake of the Seven Years’ War had become known for detaining ships and confiscating their cargo without charge or due process. The ship’s commander might have been trying to harry the Sons of Liberty, a prominent and popular tax protest group, but he drew the ire of the people on the affected coasts instead. One night, a vessel lured the schooner into grounding itself near the village of Warwick, and the crew quickly found themselves attacked and captured and their vessel put to the torch in a statement of protest against taxation.
