Obverse
Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the coin’s obverse side to identify it as legal tender of Niue. It’s accompanied by inscriptions of the Queen’s name, the date and country of issue, and the face value.
Reverse
Brilliant colorized artwork of the pioneering female scientist Marie Curie features on the coin’s reverse side, with a part of her Nobel Prize diploma in the background. Accompanying inscriptions include her name and signature and a verification of the coin’s weight and silver contents.
History
The Women in History series kicks off with a celebration of one the greatest female scientists known to history. Marie Curie is one of only two historical figures to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields, physics and chemistry, and pioneered radiology and the discovery of the phenomenon of radioactivity, a term she herself coined. Among other accomplishments, she’s remembered for discovering the elements polonium and radium and for her early work in developing mobile radiography for conducting X-rays.
