History
In the 1860s in Paris, a number of influential figures were considering the monarchal rule of Napoleon III in their country compared to the democratic system found in the United States. The abolitionist douard de Laboulaye admired the American form of government and so he proposed a gift to celebrate the upcoming centennial of Americas declaration of independence. The result was the Statue of Liberty, a magnificent metal statue that ultimately was completed in 1884.
