The bell tower of the Pisa Cathedral first began construction in the 12th century, and by the time it was completed in 1372 it had already become the Leaning Tower of Pisa, a landmark that would be famous through the subsequent centuries. The 650th anniversary of its building is commemorated by the beautiful 2022 Cook Islands Leaning Tower of Pisa 5 oz Silver Coin now available from Provident Metals.
Designed with a flat bottom edge to facilitate stand-up viewing and presenting a gorgeous antique finish, both sides of the 2022 Cook Islands Leaning Tower of Pisa Silver Coin showcase some of the most prominent and beautiful ultra high-relief artwork ever captured on a commemorative coin. This coveted collectors’ item ships from Provident Metals in protective, individual plastic capsule packaging, and all shipments are fully insured against the unlikely possibility of damage or loss.
A detailed rendering of the Leaning Tower of Pisa dominates the obverse, with the front view of the Pisa Cathedral forming a stylized backdrop along with the inscriptions “Leaning Tower of Pisa,” “1372 – 2022,” and “650 Years.”
Unusually for such a coin, an equally-detailed sculpture of the Leaning Tower also dominates the reverse, accompanied by a profile view of the cathedral as a backdrop and with a small profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as a design accent. It bears the inscriptions “Elizabeth II,” “Cook Islands,” and “25 Dollars.”
The Leaning Tower of Pisa has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and holds the distinction of being one of the world’s most photographed buildings. The identity of its original architect isn’t conclusively known, but it can be fairly said that perhaps no other architect’s work has ever been more positively defined by an accidental flaw: the unanticipated subsidence that provided its signature “leaning” look by the time of its completion. The tower has since seen multiple efforts at restoration and preservation that have also focused on keeping its iconic “lean” intact.
