The coinage of the Great Britain Sovereign was introduced in 1817 following the Great Recoinage of British gold currency in 1816. The Sovereign and Half Sovereign were the first issues of this series to hit circulation, while a Double Sovereign was issued in 1820 as a pattern coin and later issued for circulation in 1887. As of 1980, the Half Sovereign has been available as a bullion piece from the Royal Mint. In 2022, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is celebrated with a temporary change to the reverse design of the Sovereigns. Great Britain Sovereigns were introduced in 1817, but the coins are based on the historic English gold sovereigns introduced by Henry VII in 1489. The coins were issued with an effigy of King Henry VII on the obverse and the Royal Arms of England with the Tudor Rose on the reverse. When King George III revised the Sovereign concept in 1817, the coins featured the monarch on the obverse with St. George slaying a dragon on the reverse.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2022 Great Britain 1/2 Sovereign Gold Coins is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. In this 2015 design from Jody Clark, the Queen is shown in right-profile relief at the age of 89. The inscriptions on the coins include DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF and ELIZABETH II.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2022 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin comes with a depiction of the Royal Arms of England. The design shows a quartered shield that is topped by the Imperial Crown with a Lion of England supporting it on the left and the Unicorn of Scotland on the right. The design honors the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the celebration of her 70th year on the throne.

History

Half Sovereigns were also issued in the historic English gold sovereign series, but not until the reign of King Henry VIII. The modern Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin debuted in 1817 and was issued in England through 1926, with continued use in Australia up to 1933. The modern bullion version returned in 1980.
