The Double Sovereign Coin from the Royal Mint has a more intriguing history than its Sovereign and Half Sovereign counterparts. The Double Sovereign was relegated to the status of a pattern coin for much of its early history and was not issued in circulation until 1887, some 70 years after the introduction of the Sovereigns. In 2020, the Double Sovereign made its debut in the modern gold bullion series. For 2022, the Royal Mint changed the design to feature the Royal Arms of England in honor of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Provident Metals currently has 2022 Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold Coins available to you for purchase online.
When you purchase a 2022 Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold Coin online at Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that is packaged in either an individual flip or by multiples of 10 gold coins in protective tubes. All of the coins are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and have 22-karat gold content. The Crown gold alloy uses 91.67% gold content per coin with the remaining balance of the alloy commonly made up entirely of copper.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2022 Great Britain Double Sovereigns. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in the fifth-generation effigy from Jody Clark. The design captures the Queen at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown. The field includes inscriptions of DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF and ELIZABETH II.
The Royal Arms of England is on the reverse side of 2022 Great Britain Double Sovereign Gold Coins. The design shows the quartered shield of the United Kingdom with the individual coat of arms for England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The shield is topped by an Imperial Crown with the Lion of England and Unicorn of Scotland supporting the shield. This design change honors Elizabeth II’s 70th year on the throne.
The Double Sovereign was initially issued in 1820 as a pattern coin, a coin that is intended to show proof of concept for a proposed design. Double Sovereigns would not go into circulation in Britain until 1887 during the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Prior to 2020, the Double Sovereign was more commonly issued as a proof coin. The 2020 release was the first-ever bullion version of the Great Britain Double Sovereign.
