History

For more than five hundred years, the Royal Mint has issued Sovereign coins: an annual commemoration of and tribute to the year’s reigning British King or Queen. The current Sovereign coin issue is a singular occasion on two fronts. It marks the first Platinum Jubilee in history, an international celebration of seven full decades on the throne for Queen Elizabeth II. With the Queen’s passing, it also marks the end of what might be called the Second Elizabethan Era, and of the reign of a figure who had been such a constant in British life that many of her subjects had never known any other monarch.
