Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the reigning monarch of Great Britain in an age of extraordinary change. Her coronation in 1953 was the first event of its kind to be broadcast live on television. She was the first British royal to do a “walkabout,” strolling to greet the public in person instead of waving from a distance, a practice that she normalized for the Royal Family. She was the first monarch to visit the Republic of Ireland in over a century, and she became the first-ever monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the year that also became the end of an era with her passing. Her remarkable legacy is celebrated by the Royal Mint’s 2022 Great Britain Five Sovereign Gold Coin, now available from Provident Metals.
The 2022 Great Britain Five Sovereign Gold Coin celebrates the beloved monarch in over 1.5 Troy ounces of 22-carat gold. Minted to a Brilliant Uncirculated standard that preserves the coin’s original luster, it features an unusual reverse-side design and high-relief artwork. Each coin ships fully insured against damage or loss in a beautiful wooden presentation case, along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
The Sovereign’s obverse side features an effigy of the late Queen. This is accompanied by a continuous surrounding inscription of the Royal Legend “ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF,” an abbreviation of the full text ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FIDEI DEFENSATRIX.
The reverse side of this unique Sovereign coin is dominated by Timothy Noad’s sophisticated interpretation of the Royal Coat of Arms, with its year of issue inscribed below.
For more than five hundred years, the Royal Mint has issued Sovereign coins: an annual commemoration of and tribute to the year’s reigning British King or Queen. The current Sovereign coin issue is a singular occasion on two fronts. It marks the first Platinum Jubilee in history, an international celebration of seven full decades on the throne for Queen Elizabeth II. With the Queen’s passing, it also marks the end of what might be called the Second Elizabethan Era, and of the reign of a figure who had been such a constant in British life that many of her subjects had never known any other monarch.
