The Indian Head Nickel was first issued by the United States Mint in 1913 and used in circulation through 1938. Designed by James Earle Fraser, the images on this coin proved so popular that the US Mint revived the images in 2006 for the bullion American Buffalo Gold Coin for investors and collectors. Today, you have the chance to buy 2022 Indian Head Black Ruthenium Tribute Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
In 1913, James Earle Fraser created the visuals that would go on to feature on the US nickel. Known at the time as the Indian Head Nickel, or the Buffalo Nickel, these designs were approved by the administration of President William Howard Taft and featured on the US nickel from 1913 to 1938.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2022 Indian Head Black Ruthenium Tribute Coin comes with a portrait of a stoic indigenous figure. Captured in right-profile relief, this figure has an expressionless face with braided hair and feathers woven in at the back. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2021, and the F initial of James Earle Fraser.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 2022 Indian Head Black Ruthenium Tribute Coin is the American bison. The American bison is one of two bison subspecies living in North America and is one of just two species living in the world today. The bison is shown in left-profile relief on a small mound of dirt. The markings read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD, and COPY. The latter indicates these coins are tribute coins with no legal tender face value.
History
The design of these tribute coins include a thin layer of 24-karat gold applied to the image of the stoic figure on the obverse and the American bison on the reverse. These designs were created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser for the circulation nickel and later revived in 2006 for the American Buffalo Gold Coin.
