“Chibi” refers to a Japanese-inspired genre of caricature — it literally means “big head” — and the New Zealand Mint has used it to provide fresh looks at popular characters from many different genres and media. That includes the Mortal Kombat franchise, which started with a popular arcade game in 1992 and has since become a major presence in popular culture. One of the fighters who helped found the mythos of its intense and surreal world of supernatural martial arts is Sub-Zero, now celebrated with the 2022 Niue Chibi Mortal Kombat Sub-Zero 1 oz Silver Coin.
The 2022 Niue Chibi Mortal Kombat Sub-Zero Silver Coin arrives in an officially themed box with a large window ready for display. Each coin is protected by an acrylic capsule and fully insured against loss or damage by Provident Metals. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that specifies your coin’s unique number in the mintage.
Designed in 1998, the classic Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II confirms this coin as legal tender of Niue Island. It’s accompanied by inscriptions of the Queen’s name, the issuing country, the face value, and the issue date. Finally, it shows Mortal Kombat’s copyright and trademark, and verification of the coin’s purity.
Sub-Zero’s classic blue tunic and mask are featured on the coin’s reverse side in a shaped and colored Chibi culture. The “big head” style puts a particular emphasis on his enigmatic masked visage.
The rise of Mortal Kombat from being a hit arcade game to becoming a pop culture powerhouse was made possible both by its intense gameplay and its larger-than-life characters. One of the most important of these was Sub-Zero, the champion of the Lin Kuei ninja clan and a wielder of cryonic sorcery. This collectible celebrates his most iconic look, though he has appeared in many different forms and incarnations over the years.
