Obverse
A profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed originally by the famous sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley and for decades the signifier of legal tender in the British Commonwealth, features on the coin’s obverse. Along with it come the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “2022” and “2 DOLLARS.”
Reverse
A colorized and shaped sculpture of a Viking warrior comprises the coin’s reverse side. The standout elements are his horned helmet and the details on his ruddy beard and elaborately decorated shield.
History
The Chibi caricature exaggerates the head size of characters and renders them with stubby, child-like limbs: a playful and fun art style that originated in Japan. It can provide a new perspective on even the most frightening subjects, and the Viking warrior certainly qualifies.
