The Czech Lion became a national symbol of political authority and unity during the reign of Ottokar II, King of Bohemia — which used to encompass Czech territory — during the mid-13th century and also known as the Iron and Golden King. He inherited it from his predecessors in the Pemyslid Dynasty and marked its first unambiguously recorded historical usage, though many other myths and legends purport to explain its significance. History

Myths, legends, and various chronicles try to explain the importance of the lion as a symbol of the Czech nation and culture. One popular medieval chronicle attributes it to Prince Vladislaus II being awarded a crown by Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. On that crown, the lion as a crest animal represented the virtues of chivalry, strength, and courage: all qualities attributed to Vladislav while in the Emperor’s service at the Battle of Milan. Whether or not that particular story is true, the lion’s symbolic importance in Czech tradition is undeniable.
