History

When the Czech Lion series began in 2017, the lion was shown from a wide angle as it guarded the Czech coat of arms and Crown of Saint Wenceslas. A variation on this theme continued up until 2021, when the design shifted to a close-up of the lions face. And instead of guarding the crown, the lion was wearing it, instead. This is in keeping with the Czech coat of arms, which depicts a double-tailed lion wearing a crown. Regardless of how it is portrayed, the lion has played a major symbolic role in the history of the Czech Republic.
