Mount Doom is one of the most famous locations in any fantasy world ever created. The focus of the forces of evil in J.R.R. Tolkien’sThe Lord of the Rings, this sinister volcano rises high above the Plateau of Gorgorath in the northwestern Land of Mordor, its constant eruptions creating a blasted last of smoke and ash where evil creatures congregate to do the bidding of the Dark Lord Sauron. The New Zealand Mint pays tribute to this truly epic fictional locale with the 2022 Niue Lord of the Rings Mount Doom 1/4 oz Gold Coin.
The 2022 Niue Lord of the Rings Mount Doom Gold Coin captures the film version of the iconic location in detailed engraving with added high-relief touches. It ships in a customized display case inside a protective acrylic capsule, and a Certificate of Authenticity in the box carries each coin’s unique mintage in the exclusive limited mintage.
The late Queen Elizabeth II appears on the coin’s obverse side to verify it as legal tender of Niue. She is accompanied by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “25 DOLLARS” and “2022.”
The coin’s reverse side features Mount Doom as seen on the big screen in New Line Productions’ adaptations ofTheLord of the Rings. The company’s copyright and trademark appear at the outside rim along with verification of the coin’s weight and gold content.
Many locations inThe Lord of the Ringswere inspired by real-life places on Earth, and despite its extreme and dramatic nature, Mount Doom in fact is one of these. As described in Tolkien’s writing it is a stratovolcano, with a symmetrical peak built over time by explosive eruption cycles; that’s because the real-world inspiration was just such a volcano, Stromboli Island off the Sicilian coast. In Peter Jackson’s film adaptations, a different stratovolcano was cast in the “role” of Mount Doom: the stark and forbidding peak and surrounding landscape of New Zealand’s Mount Ngauruhoe, whose fire according to Maori mythology was called hence from the distant volcanoes of Hawai’i by an ancestral hero.
