History
As with many locations in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, Mount Doom had a source of inspiration in the real world: the island of Stromboli off the southern coast of Italy. One of the most active volcanoes in the world and in almost-continual eruption since 1932, its spectacular fiery displays inspired Tolkien toimagine a similar peak surrounded by a blasted and ash-covered landscape suitable for the forces of darkness. The idea went on to influence countless similar locales in fantasy fiction before hitting the big screen in New Line Cinema’sLord of the Ringsmovies.
