History

Rivendell was one of the most important Elven communities in Middle Earth of both page and screen, and the residence of numerous famous Elves. This beautiful fictional refuge was actually based on a place in the real world. The scenery of the Lauterbrunnental valley in Switzerland, where Tolkien hiked in 1911, directly inspired the author’s descriptions of Rivendell in the books, and those descriptions were so vivid that resemblance carried forward into its depiction in the blockbuster New Line Productions film adaptations.
