Rivendell was an enchanted town of the immortal Elves in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, a pivotal place in Middle Earth that played host to some of the most famous Elven heroes and artifacts. History
The iconic location of Rivendell was originally named Imladris in J.R.R. Tolkien’s created Elven language of Sindarin, meaning “valley” or “ravine.” Tolkien based it on a real place: the Lauterbrunnental valley in Switzerland where he hiked in 1911. In the famous film adaptations of Lord of the RingsandThe Hobbit,a similar landscape in New Zealand’s Kaitoke Regional Park provided the striking natural backdrop for the Elven refuge, with its crystal clear waters and green canopy providing an enchanted sense of peace and the craggy landscape still evoking the fictional site’s Sindarin name.
