The New Zealand Mint’s Tarot Card collection celebrates a centuries-old tradition of fortune telling in the form of the twenty-two images of the Major Arcana, rendered as precious pure silver collectibles that are designed to evoke the original cards of the popular Rider-Waite deck. The ninth entry is the Hermit, depicting a venerable sage at the end of a quest for knowledge. He stands atop a mountain that represents the striving and accomplishment of his journey, his left hand grasping a staff of authority and his right holding a lantern in which the six-pointed Seal of Solomon shines with the light of wisdom. This evocative archetype is celebrated by the 2022 Niue Tarot Cards The Hermit 1oz Silver Coin.
Highlights:
The 2022 Niue Tarot Cards The Hermit Silver Coin is struck in the rectangular shape of a miniature Tarot card. It comes in a book-like box package along with a Certificate of Authenticity and an informative message about the Hermit’s symbolism. It ships fully insured against loss or damage by Provident Metals, protected inside an acrylic capsule.
Obverse
The obverse side features an effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, verifying the coin as legal tender. This is joined by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “2022” and “2 DOLLARS.”
Reverse
The reverse side of this coin features a colorized image of the Hermit against a backdrop of snow-capped mountain peaks with frosted detailing. The inscriptions “IX” and “THE HERMIT” appear, respectively, above and below the image.
History
The symbolism of the New Zealand Mint’s Tarot Cards collection is based on the world’s most popular Tarot deck, named the Rider-Waite deck after the company that first published it and the scholar, Edward Waite, who designed his version of the traditional Tarot in 1909. Waite was famous for saying: “The true Tarot is symbolism; it speaks no other language and offers no other signs.” He worked with illustrator Pamela Colman Smith, a fellow mystic, to craft the detailed and symbolism-rich cards that expressed this principle. Their work became immensely influential: there are now estimated to be more than 100 million Rider-Waite decks circulating in countries all over the world.
