Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born in 1926 with little expectation of ever ascending to the throne. But everything changed in 1936, when Edward III abdicated the crown to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. This stunning event brought her father to the throne, where he became George VI. And young Elizabeth, at a mere 10 years of age, was suddenly heir apparent to the throne. King Georges reign lasted until his death in 1952, at which point his daughter Elizabeth became reigning monarch of the United Kingdom.
