On the obverse face of 2022 Proof British Gothic Crown Portrait 1 oz Coins, there is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In addition to the Coronation Necklace, we also see Her Majesty wearing her coronation crown known as the George IV State Diadem. Youll see inscriptions around the border too reading ELIZABETH II, D G REGINA F D, ST HELENA, 2022, 5 POUNDS.
The reverse of 2022 Proof Gothic Crown 1 oz Gold Coins contains a remastered design of the original Gothic Crown portrait of Queen Victoria. In this Gothic Revival design, we see the Queen wearing the St. Edwards Crown and a dress embroidered with the four flowers of Great Britain. Inscriptions in medieval Blackletter font read VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIA REG FD.
In 1846, William Wyon was commissioned by Queen Victoria to design a new Crown in honor of the 10th anniversary of her reign. Wyon enlisted the help of Scottish artist William Dyce for the reverse design so that he could devote himself to a new portrait of Her Majesty for the obverse. The result was known as The Gothic Crown and is considered by some to be Wyons masterpiece. However, only 8,000 of these coins were ever minted, which makes them extremely difficult to find today.
