There have been many toy lines about transforming robots over the years since the early Eighties, but there’s no denying that the most successful have been Hasbro’s Transformers. That success is owed in large part to the success of a 1984 animated show created to market the “robots in disguise” to a young audience that went wild for them. Like many toy lines of the day, the Transformers were all about battles between good and evil. The good Transformer robots had both humanoid and car forms and were known as Autobots, and the first that audiences met on the show was Bumblebee: a robot small in stature but large in courage, he would befriend a human boy and provided a human perspective on robotic heroism and villainy. Bumblebee is celebrated by the N.Z. Mint’s 2022 1 oz Silver Proof Niue Colorized Transformers Bumble Bee Coin.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in colorful themed box packaging within a protective acrylic case!
  • Issued in 2022, part of theTransformersseries!
  • Limited mintage of 3,000 pieces!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Face value of $2 (NZD) as legal tender of Niue.
  • Obverse side features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse side feature Bumblebee in full color beside the Transformers logo.

Bumblebee’s vintage 1984 look is perfectly captured in full color on the 2022 Proof Niue Colorized Transformers Bumble Bee Silver Coin, offset against a brilliant mirror-like finish that showcases the luster of proof-quality silver. It comes in a themed box inside a protective acrylic capsule, along with a Certificate of Authenticity showing your coin’s unique number in the limited mintage.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse side features an effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender. This is surrounded by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “TWO DOLLARS,” and “2022.”

Reverse

The coin’s reverse side features Bumblebee in full-color rendering that matches his look in the original cartoon, depicted alongside an engraved and frosted Transformers logo. The number “1984” is inscribed in a nostalgic font in the foreground.

History

Although transforming robots were not unknown as an idea for toys in the early Eighties — companies were already popularizing them in Japan — it was Hasbro who would enjoy ultimate success in bringing them to America and, so to speak, transformingthe concept into possibly the most popular toy line ever produced. Along the way, Hasbro successfully paired its product with popular media tie-ins, ranging from animated shows right up to blockbuster big-screen outings with Michael Bay. The signal success that laid the groundwork for all the others was the hit 1984 cartoon The Transformers.
