History
The Republic of Palau was first settled around 3,000 years ago. Starting in the 16th century, the Spanish Empire exerted control over the islands. Following its defeat in the Spanish-American War, the islands were ceded to the German Empire, which subsequently lost control following its defeat in World War I. After Imperial Japan occupied the islands with its military between the World Wars, the United States oversaw the islands until the formation of the independent Republic of Palau in 1981. In 1994, Palau established a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
