It was the sweet tooth of European explorers, colonists and settlers that brought the honeybee to the shores of Australia. The European honey bee is not the only insect in nature that can produce honey, but it is unmatched in the sheer amount of honey it can produce, making it globally recognized asthedefinitive honey bee. The 200th Anniversary of the introduction of these industrious pollinators and hive builders to the island continent is celebrated by the 2022 Proof Niue 200th Anniversary of Australian Honey Bee 1 oz Silver Coin, now available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
2022 Proof Niue 200th Anniversary of Australian Honey Bee Silver Coin features beautiful gilded artwork of the honeybee set against the brilliant mirrored backgrounds of a proof-quality silver collectible. It arrives in an attractive presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity, and each shipment is fully insured against even the most remote possibility of loss or damage by Provident Metals.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse side features an official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender of Niue. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE 2022,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “1 OZ 999 SILVER.”
Reverse
The reverse side of the coin features a honeybee in the foreground, and two more in the background, pollinating a cluster of flowers. Each bee carries gilded decorative touches to match the gilding around the rim and on the stylized, textured dripping honeycomb at the top left, which bears the inscription “HONEYBEE.”
History
During their travels, European explorers brought the honeybee to many places that had not previously seen them. This includes Australia, where the appearance of the first honeybee can be dated to 1822. Originally shipped as a domestic asset to allow honey production by settlers, the honeybee became an integral part of Australian life. Two centuries later, beekeeping is a popular Australian hobby and the country is home to more than 530,000 commercially-managed hives that produce more than 30,000 tons of honey every year.
