Of the many wonders of nature, one of those that’s guaranteed to evoke a sense of natural wonder in an observer is an aurora. A phenomenon produced by the interactions between the Earth’s magnetic poles and its atmosphere with electrically-charge solar particles, an aurora takes place when charged solar wind particles strike oxygen or nitrogen atoms in certain regions distributed in an oval pattern around the magnetic poles. The result is the ghostly light show that comprised the Aurora Borealis and its less well-known southern cousin, the Aurora Australis that’s commemorated by the 2022 Proof Niue Aurora Australis 1 oz Gold Coin.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a premium display case with a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Issued in 2022!
  • Limited worldwide release of just 99 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Legal Niue tender with a face value of $100 (NZD).
  • Obverse side features a profile effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse side depicts the Aurora Australis over an Antarctic landscape.

The 2022 Proof Niue Aurora Australis Gold Coin is available in a highly-exclusive mintage of ninety-nine pieces, shipping tracked and fully insured against loss or damage by the team at Provident Metals. It showcases an innovative blend of artistic techniques offset against a mirror-like proof finish, and each coin ships in a premium display case with a Certificate of Authenticity that verifies its number in the mintage.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse side features an effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, confirming the coin as legal tender. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE 2022,” “100 DOLLARS,” and “1 OZ 9999 GOLD.”

Reverse

A combination of high-relief engraving and holographic foil techniques recreate the Aurora Australis on the coin’s reverse. The prow of a small boat steers into an Antarctic inlet with detailed crags engraved on the horizon; the Aurora Australis is depicted in holographic foil in the sky above and the water below. The inscription “AURORA AUSTRALIS” appears on the boat itself.

History

Polar auroras have long been known to occur in both the Earth’s Northern and Southern Hemispheres, but it’s usually the northern version — the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights — that takes the lion’s share of the attention. Less well known but just as spectacular, the Aurora Australis can be spied from the right vantage points during the winter months of March to September. Since this has to be done from remote areas of the most southern landmasses in the Hemisphere, however, catching such glimpses is a rarer prospect, and this gold collectible matches that rarity with an extremely exclusive release of just ninety-nine items.
