Obverse
The coin’s obverse side confirms it as legal tender of the island nation of Niue with a classic profile effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is surrounded by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “250 DOLLARS” and “2022.”
Reverse
The Flash, wearing the costume design he first donned in 1956 as the Silver Age of comic books was beginning, features in a powerful pose on the coin’s reverse side. He’s accompanied by his lightning bolt logo, and inscriptions at the coin’s rim verify the purity and weight of the gold along with the copyright and trademark of DC.
History
First appearing as part of the original wave of Golden Age superheroes in 1939, the Flash was one of the famous characters who helped establish DC Comics as a major brand. Although superhero comics declined for a time after World War 2 as the Western and horror genres grew — and particularly as some alleged that supers were an undesirable influence on the youth — the Flash made a comeback in 1956 with the secret identity of forensic scientist Barry Allen. This version of the character remains his most popular and famous iteration, a natural choice for featuring on a precious collectible.
