The Goddesses of Love coin series celebrates a divine sisterhood whose true power and complexity is often misunderstood. That’s certainly true of the Norse goddess Freya, perhaps one of the most important and under-recognized of the Aesir. A goddess of love and fertility, she was also a patroness of battle and death and wise in magic, which in fact she taught to the other gods. Ambiguous and powerful, Freya has inspired a fascinating collectible the 2022 Black Proof Niue Freya 2 oz Silver Coin.
Coin Highlights:
The 2022 Black Proof Niue Freya Silver Coin commemorates a sophisticated deity with an equally sophisticated design. Six different decorative techniques are represented on this one coin: a black proof finish, selective antique touches, laser frosting, microprinting, resin fill decorations, and high-relief engraving. It comes in a quality presentation case and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
Obverse
An effigy of Elizabeth II dominates the coin’s obverse side, confirming it as legal tender. It’s joined by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE ISLAND,” “5 DOLLARS” and “2022.”
Reverse
Freya features in a high-relief engraving on the coin’s reverse side. Deep red resin-filled decorations represent her jewelry while she holds her sword and is flanked by her legendary cats. The image is framed by a border of stylized Norse design.
History
Freya was an ambiguous goddess, known for her beauty, her love of jewelry, and her talent for seduction on the one hand and for her connections with battle, death, and the most obscure kinds of magical wisdom and power on the other. Unbeknownst to the many silver-screen Vikings in modern movies who yell “Valhalla!” as they run into battle, it was Freya and not Odin who had the first pick of souls in the afterlife, where her chosen would populate her great hall of revelry at Flkvangr. Freya was a goddess not to be crossed or trifled with.
