Provident Metals is pleased to make available the 2022 Niue The Shire 1/4 oz Gold Coin, commemorating both an iconic fantasy location and a transformative time in cinema. J.R.R. Tolkien’s bestselling books made the Shire a well-known “place” in the imaginary setting of Middle-Earth, and the big screen adaptations filmed in New Zealand in the early 21st century were game-changing blockbusters for the movie industry in general and the island nation in particular. The New Zealand Mint teamed up with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to create this precious, extremely limited-issue collectible.
The 2022 Niue The Shire Gold Coin arrives ready for display, in a compact themed box and a velvet case that can be angled to optimize showcasing of this beautiful collectible. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that identifies each item’s unique number in the mintage, and your shipment is fully insured by Provident Metals. Supplies are extremely limited, so be sure to order early.
The coin’s obverse side features the familiar effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “Queen Elizabeth II,” “Niue,” “25 Dollars,” and “2022.”
The front door and fence of a Hobbit-hole, the distinctive homes of the Shire, appear on the reverse. It’s joined by the copyright and trademark of New Line Productions and the verifying inscription “1/4 oz 9999 Fine Gold.”
The Shire and its Hobbits formed the emotional core of J.R.R. Tolkien’s most famous works,The HobbitandThe Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit-hole’s signature blend of cozy prosperity and homely simplicity was the subject of careful design attention from Peter Jackson and his team when they came to adapt these stories for the silver screen. So important did these movies prove on the global stage that the film sets, complete with functioning Hobbit-holes, remain tourist attractions today. They’re thus a perfect subject for a New Zealand Mint collectible.
