Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of 2022 Proof British Gothic Crown Portrait 2 oz Coins. There have been five official portraits of the Queen used for coinage (though six in Australia), with this one by engraver Jody Clark being the most recent. You will find inscriptions across the obverse rim reading ELIZABETH II, D G REGINA F D, ST HELENA, 2022, 5 POUNDS.
Reverse
Queen Victoria is featured on the reverse face of 2022 Proof British Gothic Crown Portrait 2 oz Gold Coins. Some of the neo-Gothic elements of this portrait include the Queens embroidered dress, looped plait braid, and the St. Edwards crown atop her head. Also lending a particularly medieval Gothic vibe to the design are the Blackletter inscriptions reading VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIA REG FD.
History
The friendship between William Wyon and Queen Victoria began when Her Majesty sat for him at a mere 13 years of age. However, their relationship didnt truly blossom until he produced a portrait in 1838 in celebration of her one-year anniversary as Queen. Known as the Young Head portrait, this flattering effigy is renowned for its uncomplicated, neo-classical style. Victoria herself was such a fan that she kept it on British coinage for almost 50 years.
