Lady Justice, as an allegorical representation of the moral force of law, dates back to the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus and his institution of the cult of Justitia. She is typically associated with several symbols, including the sword and toga she wears on the monument to Queen Victoria where she represents one of the monarch’s six signal virtues. As the fourth of those virtues, she’s celebrated by the fourth issue in the East India Company’s Queen’s Virtues series, the 2022 Proof St. Helena Queen’s Virtues Justice 1 oz Silver Coin now available from Provident Metals.
The 2022 Proof St. Helena Queen’s Virtues Justice Silver Coin is a tribute to a Lady Justice conceived as an active champion of order, with select gold-plated decorative touches, exquisitely engraved artwork, and brilliant mirrored backgrounds that identify a true proof-quality collectible. Provident Metals ships each coin fully insured against any possible mishap in a secure high-quality coin case along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Engraver Jody Clark designed the latest official effigy of Elizabeth II that dominates the coin’s obverse side. It’s joined by the inscriptions “QUEEN ELIZABETH II,” “ST. HELENA,” “ONE POUND,” and “2022.”
Lady Justice, decorated in gold plating, bearing a sword, and accompanied by a young squire, dominates the coin’s reverse side. The image is accompanied by the inscription “FIAT JUSTITIA,” meaning “Let Justice Be Done.”
The reign of Queen Victoria was the longest of any English monarch to that point and defined an era. The Victoria Monument, built after her death, showcased the six virtues believed to have defined her rule during that era, among them Justice: the unflinching commitment to the moral force of law, and opposition to corruption and lawlessness. The creators of the monument reached heavily into Neoclassical themes and allegory to realize their vision of these virtues, a vision that has remained relevant and ready to be celebrated by the East India Company’s Queen Virtues series over a century later.
