Fossil hunter Barnum Brown discovered the first recorded remains of Tyrannosaurus Rex at Hell Creek, Montana in 1902: and though it turned out the same dinosaur had been independently discovered and given different names on two prior occasions, it was Brown’s name that stuck. The gigantic predator with its four-foot jaws and six-inch teeth captured the imaginations of observers, and it has remained the best-known of the dinosaurs. History

The early history of paleontology was marked by one of the great scientific rivalries of the late 19th century between the wealthy gentleman scientist Edward Copes and the introverted, methodical researcher Othniel Marsh. Friends at first, the pair eventually found themselves in a bitter rivalry that saw them deploying armies of fossil hunters into the American West. In the course of that rivalry, called the Bone Wars, Copes happened across the vertebrae of a great dinosaur; little did he know that a decade after his find, the first identifiableTyrannosaurus Rexskeleton would be unearthed from a fossil bed in Montana and named by Barnum Brown. By that name, it would go on to be the most famous dinosaur of all for more than a century.
