The silver and gold coins in 1 oz weights date back to the 1999 launch of the series as the Zambia Elephant, while the platinum coin is the newest having joined in 2016 after the coin had become the Somalia Elephant more than a decade sooner. Currently, the Bavarian State Mint issues the Somalia Elephant Coins with a wide variety of options for investors. These include silver weights of 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo, as well as gold bullion coins that range from 1/2 Gram, 1 Gram, and 1/50 oz to 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz. The platinum coin is only available in 1 oz platinum.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2022 Somalia Elephant 1 Kilo Silver Coins is an effigy of the national coat of arms. The Somali coat of arms features a crowned shield with a star at the center and a field of horizontal lines. The shield is supported on either side by heraldic leopards with fern leaves and spears. Inscriptions on this side include SOMALI REPUBLIC, 2022, and 2000 SHILLINGS.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 2022 Somalia Elephant Silver Coins features an image of two African bush elephants. The field features an adult elephant walking along the savanna with its young calf by its side. On the horizon in the distance are trees, while a small flock of birds flies overhead. The design field includes inscriptions that read AFRICAN WILDLIFE, ELEPHANT, and 1 KG AG 999.9.

History

The coins in the Somalia Elephant Series remain a part of the African Wildlife Series from the Bavarian State Mint. Originally, the coins were issued from 1999 to 2003 as the Zambia Elephant Series of bullion coins. Since 2004, the coins have been issued as the Somalia Elephants.
