Obverse
A portrait of Paul Kruger is featured on the obverse side of 2022 South African Krugerrand Gold Coins. This portrait, modernized over time, was first created in 1892 by Otto Schultz for use on South African Pound gold coins in the 19th century. This left-profile relief captures an image of the former Boer statesman and military leader. This stately bust of the former four-term president is surrounded by inscriptions of SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. These inscriptions are in Afrikaans and English, respectively.
Reverse
The Springbok antelope is shown in the reverse design of the 2022 South African Krugerrand 1/10 oz Gold Coin. The depiction of the Springbok shows this member of the antelope family pronking along the grassy plains of southern Africa. This design of the Springbok in right-profile relief was created in 1947 by Coert Steynberg and first appeared on five shillings coins in South Africa. It comes with inscriptions of 1/10 KRUGERRAND, 2022, and FYNGOUD 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD.
History
The 1/10 oz gold coin in the South African Krugerrand Series has twice surpassed 1 million coins in a given year, but both of these years came in the early 1980s following the debut of this weight in 1980. The 1981 coin sold 1.108 million and the 1982 coin sold 1.017 million. Additionally, it is the only coin of the three fractional-ounce weights to surpass the 1 oz gold coin in a given year. The 1/10 oz gold coin outsold the 1 oz gold coin in 1991-1992 and 1995-2000. Since 2008, the 1 oz gold coin has reasserted its dominance with mintages well above the other coins.
