The French artist Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Dor was born at Strasbourg in 1832. He was identified as a major talent early in his life, and outside of his paintings would create a major legacy in wood engravings. His series of over two hundred and forty Biblical engravings, completed in 1866, became the inspiration for the Scottsdale Mint’s Biblical series of silver collectibles. First issued in 2015, this series has grown steadily in popularity with each year, and the latest issue is the 2022 The Dead Christ Biblical 2 oz Silver Coin, now available from Provident Metals.

The 2022 The Dead Christ Biblical Silver Coin features a high-relief, beautifully-antiqued rimless design centered on one of Dor’s famous Biblical scenes. These coins come individually housed in a card with an assay certificate, packaged in turn in a gift box designed to resemble a Bible. A Certificate of Authenticity ships with each coin, printed on antique-styled paper alongside with a passage from the Gospel of John. That Certificate’s serial number is matched by a laser-etched number on the coin’s edge.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse side features Raphael Maklouf’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender of Niue. This is joined by the inscriptions “QUEEN ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “TWO DOLLARS,” “2022,” and verification of its weight and silver contents.

Reverse

The reverse side features a high-relief rendition a Dor engraving that shows a small group of Christ’s followers mourning his death on the cross. This is accompanied by the inscription “THE DEAD CHRIST.”

History

The Scottsdale Mint’s Biblical series is a tribute to the singular vision of the original artist, but does not seek to simply miniaturize and reproduce his works. The Mint’s creative team does draw on a different engraving for each issue, but interprets and adapts those images to capture their spirit in the medium of high-relief, antiqued pure silver coinage.
