History

The terminology of “bull” and “bear” in stock market jargon is centuries old. The “bear” came first, alluding to the proverb “it is not wise to sell the bear’s skin before one has caught the bear.” The “bearskin” was shortened to “bear,” and referred originally to crooked brokers and stock-selling practices that promised real value for something unreal or purely speculative, such as happened during the infamous South Sea Bubble in the early 18th century in which multitudes of traders were found to be selling stock they did not own. It was a financial debacle for so many investors that it permanently identified the word “bear” with market downturns. Alexander Pope contributed the term “bull” as a poetic counterpoint to “bear,” writing of the scandal in 1720: “Come fill the South Sea goblet full; / The gods shall of our stock take care: / Europa pleased accepts the Bull, / And Jove with joy puts off the Bear.” Bulls and Bears have symbolized the waxing and waning of the markets ever since.
