Bring one of the legends of Greek mythology to your coin collection. The 2022 Tokelau Goddess Europa 1 oz Silver Coin depicts an infamous moment in the life of Europa, the Greek mythological figure that is the namesake of the continent of Europe.
The obverse of this coin includes an image of Europa. She is shown riding a bull, which is Zeus in one of his many disguises. The king of the Greek gods was known for disguising himself so he could woo and seduce women in the mortal realm. Sometimes, the disguises were to keep his wife, Hera, from seeing him. In this case, wearing the guise of a bull was used to lure Europa into thinking he was safe and tame, which caused her to climb on his back. Once she was there, he ran off to the sea, swam across it as a bull and carried her to Crete. The inscriptions on the reverse spell out GODDESS EUROPA and 1 OZ 999.9 FINE SILVER.
The reverse of the 2022 Tokelau Goddess Europa Silver Coin includes a right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait was created for use on coins by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998 and was used as the official UK Royal Mint image of Her Majesty through 2015. Even years later, the IRB effigy of the queen is popular and used on coins throughout the globe. Inscriptions on the border of the coin read ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS, TOKELAU and 2022.
The coin ships in a protective flip for individual specimens or in plastic tubes of 20 silver coins when you purchase by multiples of 20. All of the coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
According to the myth, Europa eventually marries a king of Crete and becomes a queen. To memorialize her story, perhaps because she bore three of his sons, Zeus put the constellation of a bull in the sky. That’s the constellation Taurus. Greek historian Herodotus explains that Europa may have actually been kidnapped by Cretans in revenge for the previous kidnapping of Io.
