Obverse
The inscriptions on the obverse of this coin are 5 DOLLARS, TERRA 2022, ELIZABETH II, and TOKELAU. They’re presented within the border of the coin, which is made to look like a compass dial with 360 degrees marked out in detail. Inside the border is a map of part of the world, including areas of Asia, Oceania, and Australia. The landmasses are created with a paisley pattern that stands out against the lovely field, and the map portion of the design is surrounded by a geometric stylized border.

Reverse
The inscriptions on the reverse of the 2022 Tokelau Terra Silver Coin spell out 1 OZ FINE SILVER 9999, TERRA 2022, and SERVA ME, SERVABO TE. The Latin phrase means PROTECT ME, AND I WILL PROTECT YOU. It’s a nod to the need for all people to work to care for Terra, or Earth, as there is only one planet providing for humankind. The inscriptions are included in a border styled to look like a compass gauge. Inside the order, a map of the Atlantic region is depicted, including parts of Africa, Europe, and North and South America. The continents are patterned in paisley and the ocean features a grid-like pattern. It also houses a stylized compass rose that adds to the beauty of the piece.

History
Maps of the world have existed for centuries, but with new knowledge and insight into geography, they’ve changed a lot over time. Ptolemy created a geography book listing locations and using latitude and longitude as early as 150 AD, and by 1154, Italian cartographers were beginning to create world maps based on information from travelers. But the shape of the globe as we know it today didn’t start to show up on maps consistently until the 1500s.
