History

Aphrodite was believed by ancient Greeks to have originated at Cyprus, perhaps at a real place called Aphrodite’s Rock known for just the kind of foaming seas that featured in her myth. According to theTheogonyof the poet Hesiod, she was conceived from violence, generated when the flesh of the Titan Ouranos fell into the sea after a battle against his son Kronos.
