Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love and passion, procreation, beauty, and lust. Believed to have been born fully formed from the foaming sea — her name even derives from “aphros,” the Greek word for “foam” — the myth of her birth has been an artistic motif in Western art for centuries. This gorgeous bullion collectible features this scene in a Brilliant Uncirculated finish that showcases the coin’s original-mint luster and the full magnificence of its artwork. The 2022 Tuvalu Gods of Olympus Aphrodite 1 oz Gold Coin shows her surrounded by creatures of the sea, and is available from Provident Metals.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse side features Ian Rank-Broadley’s famous effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender of Tuvalu. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “1 oz 9999 Ag,” “2022,” “TUVALU,” “100 DOLLARS,” and “QUEEN ELIZABETH II.”

Reverse

The Goddess of Love features on the reverse, in flowing robes on Aphrodite’s Rock with scallop shells around her, a dove in one hand and a mirror in the other, with three dolphins and a seagull in the background. A swan spreads it wings in the foreground, along with the inscription “APHRODITE.”

History

Aphrodite was believed by ancient Greeks to have originated at Cyprus, perhaps at a real place called Aphrodite’s Rock known for just the kind of foaming seas that featured in her myth. According to theTheogonyof the poet Hesiod, she was conceived from violence, generated when the flesh of the Titan Ouranos fell into the sea after a battle against his son Kronos. Those origins perhaps explained her complex nature, for aside from representing beauty and pleasure, she could also represent violent passion and excess: the Spartans called her “Aphrodite the Warlike,” and she bore epithets like “Killer of Men” and “Gravedigger.” The Perth Mint’s Gods of Olympus series celebrates her power to capture the imaginations of people in any era.
