The latest issue in the Gods of Olympus series features the most indisputably iconic image of Aphrodite, inspired by the tale of her birth in the ancient poemTheogonywhich has the goddess emerging from sea foam after a battle between the Titans Ouranos and Kronos. It’s a theme that has seen countless iterations over many centuries in an endless variety of styles by sculptors and painters. This extraordinary collectible shows her rising from the waves surrounding creatures of her element, with a swan spreading its wings in the foreground. The Perth Mint’s 2022 Tuvalu Gods of Olympus Aphrodite 5 oz Silver Coin is now available from Provident Metals.

The obverse side features an effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II to confirm it as legal tender of Tuvalu. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “5 oz 9999 Ag,” “2022,” “TUVALU,” “5 DOLLARS,” and “QUEEN ELIZABETH II.”
It’s the coin’s reverse side that features the Goddess of Love in flowing robes with a dove perched on one hand, surrounded by gulls and fish, mollusks and dolphins. A swan in the foreground is accompanied by the inscription “APHRODITE.”
The Perth Mint’s Gods of Olympus series celebrates the most influential deities of Greek myth, and its sixth issue is devoted to Aphrodite. She was a complicated figure in the ancient Greek world: worshiped as the goddess of love, pleasure, and beauty, she was the patroness of the luxuries that made life worth living. On the other hand, according to the poet Hesiod, she was also born from a violent act in a dispute among Titans, rising from the sea foam after the fall of the Titan Ouranos, and she also represented the dangerous and unstable side of passion. In Sparta she was depicted armed and venerated as Aphrodite Areiaor “Aphrodite the Warlike,” and she had epithets elsewhere like “Gravedigger” and “Killer of Men” that warned the unwary against the perils of excess.
