All coins in the American Eagle Gold Series are 22-karat gold specimens. Historically, the US Mint last issued 22-karat gold coins in 1833. The gold content in American coins dropped below .900 content in 1834 and returned to .900 gold in 1837 and remained there until 1933 when gold coining halted. American Eagle Gold Coins have 91.67% gold with 5.33% copper and 3% silver.
Obverse
On the obverse face of each 2022-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin is a portrait of Lady Liberty. This iconic design shows Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The field includes the U.S. Capitol Building, sun rays on the horizon, and a ring of stars around the field. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, 2022, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2022-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin features a depiction of the American bald eagle. This new design debuted in mid-2021 and shows the head of the bald eagle in left-profile relief. This side comes with inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1 OZ FINE GOLD 50 DOLLARS.
History
Proof American Eagle Gold Coins debuted in 1986 with only these 1 oz gold coins available. The next two years would see the fractional-ounce coins introduced, with the 1/2 oz released in 1987 and the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.
