History

The Four Symbols of traditional Chinese cosmology, also known as the Four Supernatural Spirits and the Four Auspicious Beasts, are mythic creatures that appear in the Chinese system of constellations and are seen as guardians of the four cardinal directions. They also represent seasons, emotions, auspicious virtues, and elements, and each has its own origin myths. The East and spring are guarded by the Azure Dragon, and the South and summer are guarded by the Vermilion Bird. In Western terminology, these are simply called the Dragon and the Phoenix, who come together to present blessings for households, marriages, and fertility.
