For over 30 years, the British Gold Britannia has been issued by The Royal Mint featuring only one monarch on the obverse. Throughout the coins history, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the only figure on the obverse. Following her passing in September 2022, The Royal Mint started phasing out her effigy on coinage. The final release of Britannias with her portrait occurred in early 2023. Right now, 2023 British Britannia 1/4 oz Gold Coins are available in certified condition from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2023 British Britannia 1/4 oz Gold Coin offered here comes in near-perfect condition. Mint State 69 coins show full, original mint luster and feature no more than two minor flaws. These flaws are limited to tiny contact marks or hairlines. The NGC certifies these coins as among the last 500 coins struck in 2023 with Elizabeth II on the obverse.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 British Britannia Gold Coins features the final effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, created in 2015 by Jody Clark. This right-profile portrait shows the Queen at 89 years old, wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. Inscriptions include 25 POUNDS, ELIZABETH II, and D.G. REG. F.D.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2023 British Britannia 1/4 oz Gold Coin, you will find Philip Nathans depiction of Britannia. This design, introduced in 1987, shows Britannias full-length figure holding a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. She wears a Corinthian helmet and rests her left hand on a Union Jack shield. Inscriptions read BRITANNIA, 2023, 1/4 OZ, and 999.9 FINE GOLD.
History
Queen Elizabeth IIs reign was the longest in British history, lasting from 1952 until her death in 2022. She appointed 15 British Prime Ministers during her reign, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss, and held weekly meetings with each to discuss state matters.
